Old Balinese songket

Old Balinese songket

With its shimmering splashes of silver threads, the somptuous songket cloth is intended for the grand gesture for public theatrical performances and ceremonial displays of status and wealth. Previously only worn by the aristocracy on special occasions, this example was handspun on a dark red violet silk combination typical of the region of Buleleng. Its silverwoven geometrical designs feature two outter lines of "Tumpals", triangular spear heads design to protect the sacred cloth's inner magic designs. 20th century
