Batik & Textiles

Batik has become synonymous with Indonesia - the island of Java-  in particular. It is closely entwined with the other great artforms of Java, the wayang kulit shadow plays and the gamelan orchestras which accompany the wayang and classical dance performances. Not only did the Javanese dalang (puppeteer) of the wayang kulit preside over the most important of the performing arts, he was also an important source of batik patterns. When creating his puppets, he made perforated patterns of what they would wear. These were later sold in the village market to eager women who would copy the designs on batik by blowing charcoal through the holes. It is commonly held that batik was originally the preserve of Indonesian royalty and aristocracy. It was the princesses and the noblewomen who had both the highly refined design sense and the time to draft the traditional patterns of consumate beauty and mystical importance. The feudal courts of Jogjakarta and Surakarta were known to reserve certain batik designs exclusively for royal attire. (ref:Indonesian batik. S.Frazer-Lu) Our collection of exclusive one-of-a-kind handpainted batiks has been carefully selected and assembled from various markets and traders in Java and Bali over the last 45 years.
