This old mask is part of a quite rare group of typically slightly smaller masks from the island of Madura. (Said to be worn by smaller elder dancers). The thickly layered old (Chinese "Kencu") red pigment color is attributed to a brave and strong character. Its bulging eyes symbolize fierceness and power. Old very hard dark brown wood. Age  over 100 years old.
